Gresley Rovers keeper Bob Aston is poised to dramatically reclaim his first team spot in time for Saturday’s FA Vase fifth round tie at Knowsley.
Aston, out since December 15 with a broken thumb, returns to first team action against Shepshed Charterhouse at the Moat Ground tonight (7.30pm) after two reserve team outings.

Coach Steve Dolby said this morning: “Bob has had the all-clear from the doctor to play tonight and we will decide after the game between him and Tony More for Saturday’s game.

“He’s still got a steel pin in his thumb but he has put back his operation to have it removed by a week to make himself available for the Vase game.”

Gresley are expected to field a changed line-up for tonight’s Evans Halshaw Floodlit Cup game and name a 15-man squad which includes a mystery striker called Gamble.

No-one at the club appeared to know the player’s Christian name this morning but Dolby said: “He’s a centre forward who played for British Universities last season.”
