Bromley oils the Northwood machine
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Frank Northwood’s plans for a perfect footballing machine at Gresley Rovers’ Moat Ground are floundering with the season not yet a month old.
Northwood began with almost an embarrassment of riches on the playing front but has been hit by a string of setbacks.

Blow one – came when skipper Dean Page was unable to start the season through injury – and he now faces a three-week suspension.

Blow two – followed with talented striker Tracey Norton reporting long-term unfit, following a leg operation.

Blow three – arrived on the opening day of the season when full back Paul Turner suffered a crippling Achilles tendon injury.

Blow four – was another throwback to last season – suspension to top scorer Paul Acklam after a sending off at Hinckley Town.

Blow five – cam on Saturday when dependable defender Martin Dick ended up in plaster after suffering a bad ligament pull.

Northwood said last night: “One minute you seem well off for defenders and the next you’re looking round and saying: “Who can I pick?”

Northwood is poised to solve his immediate problems by restoring Mark Bromley to the Moat Ground after an unhappy spell at Tamworth.

“He’s taken a lot of stick from our supporters but he’s a good player who never gives you less than 100 per cent.”

Andy Maddocks is poised to replace the suspended Acklam tomorrow and Northwood said: “I’m quite happy to have a lad who’s experienced and who hit the target regularly this season.

“Andy didn’t loose his place in the side. He was just unlucky to be ill for the Millfields game and Brian Beresford came in to stake his claim. Now we’re playing with three front men and Brian has done well. He’s only scored once but he’s set up several goals and has brought a lot out of Kieron Smith. Brian will score a lot of goals for us this season and he’ll make a lot more.”
