Wells gets his orders
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood last night turned his critical gaze on summer signing Ian Wells.
As Rovers prepared for tomorrow’s FA Cup contest against Paget Rangers at the Moat Ground, Northwood told Wells: “Start scoring goals.”

So far, Rovers have leaned heavily on another summer capture, Steve Astley, in the scoring stakes – but Northwood is now demanding that Wells starts to share the burden.

He said: “I want to see him getting in where it hurts. Staying out of trouble is alright, but I believe that strikers should score goals and Ian has got to start getting on the end of things.

“It would be nice to think he can start against Paget tomorrow because they’re a side capable of scoring a few goals themselves.”

Although the Banks’s League title remains the overwhelming ambition at the Moat Ground, Northwood is anxious that Gresley should put together a Cup run. He said: “It’s good for the fans and it’s good for the players. It gives everyone a little bit more confidence.

“I’m expecting a tough game. They’ve got a lot of pace up front and can’t beat treated lightly. They’ll be aware of our reputation and feel that means it’s a harder game for us than for them.”

Midfielder John Bottomley gets his first call of the season for Gresley Rovers’ FA Cup preliminary clash with Banks’s League rivals Paget Rangers at the Moat Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Bottomley, now recovered from a pre-season injury is included in a 15-man squad. But skipper Bob Aston, first-choice goalkeeper last season, is again overlooked by manager Frank Northwood.
