Rovers trio hope for cup call
Story courtesy of
Gresley Rovers boss Steve Dolby plans to ring the changes for tomorrow’s much-postponed Barclay’s Southern League Cup trip to Sutton Coldfield Town (7.30pm).
Craig Weston, Scott Elliott and Graeme Rigg are all in the line for a place in Dolby’s starting line-up as Rovers prepare to finally meet a side they should have played as early as the third day of the season.

With both clubs enjoying runs in various cup competitions, however, both league and league cup meetings have been repeatedly postponed.

Meanwhile, as Sutton have made impressive progress in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy – they still await a replay at VS Rugby in the latter competition – Rovers have shot to the top of the league only to stumble in recent games.

And Dolby has now lost patience with seeing his high-scoring side leak goals with alarming regularity.

Even before Saturday’s 4-4 draw at Weston-super-Mare Dolby was planning to bring Weston, Elliott and Rigg into his line-up, with the latter two likely to start in defensive positions.

Rigg is lined up to play in a sweeper’s role with Elliott, for whom Dolby had special words of praise on Saturday, capable of playing either flank.

Dolby rated Elliott “the best player on the park” after he came on for the final 20 minutes at Weston saying: “He won the ball well and started setting things up for us – which we hadn’t been doing earlier.”

Teenage goalkeeper Lee Rippin also retains his place in the squad – even though regular first choice Bob Aston has shaken off a groin strain.
