Dolby aims for title

Gresley Rovers are aiming to claim the Beazer Homes Midlands at the first attempt, manager Steve Dolby pledged last night.
Dolby, speaking at the club’s annual meeting, said it was not unrealistic to talk about winning the title.

“Some people laughed when I said at the start at the start of the season I was aiming for a top six place. But after our good start we’ve got to have a push at the league title.”

Dolby, whose team were playing Hinckley Town today seeking their eighth win in eight starts, made his pledge after club members heard Rovers had made a trading loss of £39,000 last year – almost entirely due to ground improvements to enable Rovers to step up from the West Midlands League.

Treasurer Neil Betteridge – elected club secretary during the meeting – said: “Ground improvements cost a lot of money. We spent £31,798 – the vast majority for Beazer Homes League requirements.

“But this season particularly with sponsorship and good attendances to date, the club is in a healthy financial position.”

Following last night’s meeting Betteridge will occupy a dual secretary-treasurer role at the club, with last season’s secretary, Rod Summers, becoming fixture secretary.

Gordon Duggins remains president, Peter Hall Chairman and Dennis Everitt vice-chairman, with the rest of committee re-elected en-bloc.
