Rovers set to test their riches
Story courtesy of
It’s crunch time in more ways than one for Gresley Rovers on the eve of their long-awaited Beazer Homes League Premier Division debut.
Previously modest expectations are soaring with the arrival of ex-Ram Robbie Briscoe and former Moat hero Martin Devaney.

The signings mean manager Steve Dolby has quietly built up a squad that contains an impressive depth of ability and experience.

Only Jason Minton and Steve Astley are missing from last season’s West Midlands League championship squad while new recruits include Bob Aston, Dave Swainston, Tony Marsden, Graeme Rigg and Mick Taplin – plus Briscoe and Devaney.

Inevitably, familiar names will be missing when Rovers line up to face Dudley at the Moat tomorrow but Dolby insists that – despite having told midfielder Dave Read that he would not be found a place – he will not be showing anyone else the door.

“They’ve all got to be prepared to stick around and fight for places but if they’re prepared to do that I’m happy for everyone to stay,” he said.

Dolby intends to field virtually the same side that drew 2-2 with Burton Albion with attack his only “problem” area.

“I’ve more or less settled my side with the exception of the forward line. With Craig Weston doubtful with a stomach strain it means I’ll probably choose three from Mick Taplin, Kieron Smith, Paul Acklam and Devaney.”

Both Taplin, with four goals, and Smith with three, have shown impressive pre-season form, while Acklam has scored three in two games for the reserves this week.
