Gresley wait for green light
Story courtesy of Barry James
Gresley Rovers will soon know their fate as to whether their unceasing efforts to win promotion to the Beazer Midland have been successful.
After previous rejections, the West Midlands League champions-elect are again in the frame, waiting for the nod of approval from the Beazer inspectors.

And after painstaking step-by-step ground improvements masterminded by Frank McArdle, Rovers are very confident this time.

However, one familiar face will be missing from any celebrations. Veteran manager Frank Northwood was shown the door after a public slanging match with the chairman and committee members.

It seems hard to imagine Rovers without Frank Northwood. His track record has been impeccable – only 35 defeats in nearly 350 games under his stewardship.

One seasoned, independent observer told me: “Funnily enough, there was barely a ripple of dissent from the supporters afterwards.”

So, with Steve Dolby now in charge, life goes on after Frank with promotion as the prime target.

True to his word, local government lawyer McArdle has continued his quest of ensuring that all the necessary ground rules have been followed.

A series of ground improvements have been completed at an estimated cost of £10,000.

Small pockets of land have been acquired by Rovers, who are hemmed in by housing on three sides.

Even moving fencing nine inches or so will have made all the difference come the big inspection day.
