Rovers set for Easter party
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers were today hoping to make Monday’s Bank Holiday clash with Hinckley Athletic (3pm) into a league title party.
The West Midlands League championship shield is waiting to be brought out of the Moat Ground trophy cupboard if Rovers can take four points from their remaining four games of the season.

Following today’s potentially hazardous trip to Blakenall – one of only three sides with an outside chance of pipping Gresley to the title – Rovers face two home games in the space of three days aiming to make certain of their second league triumph in as many seasons.

Last year, the Moatmen won their first West Midlands championship at a canter but it has been a closer-run affair this time around.

However, they now seem certain to complete their major aim for the season of retaining the trophy and aim to stage a celebration in front of their own fans.

If they can’t do the job against Hinckley, who held the champions elect to a 1-1 draw at Middlefield Lane on Boxing Day, they will be looking to finish it for certain against West Bromwich Town on Wednesday evening (7.45) by staging a repeat of the 7-1 win they achieved over the Black Country side at Noose Lane back in October – Gresley’s biggest victory of the season.

Manager Steve Dolby was hoping top scorer Brian Beresford, who was set to miss today’s trip with an ankle injury, would be fit to resume his place in attack on Monday, although defender Stuart Evans has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
