Gresley Rovers vs Atherstone United

The Reseves had to battle back from 2-0 down for the second successive game to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The half time introduction of Mick Lonergan inspired Rovers in the second half as the former 1st team favourite showed glimpses of the form that saw him become a Moat favourite a few years ago.

A mix up between skipper Paul Grosse and keeper Brad Clarke gave Atherstone the perfect start on 4 minutes when Chapmen was left to roll the ball into an empty net.

Things went from bad to worse on 20 mins when poor defensive play allowed Smith to shoot from 22 yards and his shot was deflected by Grosse past a helpless Clarke.

Rovers came out of the traps flying in the second half and three quick goals soon had the sizeable crowd buzzing. Danny Lonergan floated a free kick to the far post for the Skipper Grosse to head home on 49 minutes.

Ryan Yearsley equalised on 53 minutes when he cooly lobbed Gettings in the Atherstone goal after being put through by Grosse. Rovers took the lead on 57 minutes when fine work by Matt Moran on the right saw him round the keeper before pulling back for Carl Timms to drive home from 12 yards out.

Moran again was provider on 72 minutes when he cut in from the left before finding Yearsley at the far post for a simple tap in. Atherstone made it 4-3 on 83 minutes when Arniie Griffiths fired a 25 yard free kick past Brad Clarke.

Earl Alexander sealed a fine second half performance with an excellent strike after good work down the right by Mick Lonergan.
