Rovers pay high price for success

Gresley Rovers won their final home game of the season last night – but lost two players in the process.
Midfielder Richard Wardle and striker Kieron Smith were both victims of bad fouls by West Bromwich Town defender Dave Mulcahy, who was eventually sent off after hacking down teenage winger Chris Parkins before Paul Acklam grabbed an 85th minute winner.

Wardle’s injury was particularly nasty with manager Steve Dolby saying: “Richard has stud marks from his neck to his waist.”

Wardle, Kieron Smith, neck and Brian Beresford, ankle are all doubtful for Tuesday’s final league game at Pelsall while midfielder Neil Lovell and defender Stuart Evans could also miss the game.

Meanwhile, contractors are set to move in for a major pitch-levelling project at the ground as Rovers step up their bid for promotion to the Beazer Homes League.

And fans are again being asked to do their bit by turning up at the Moat Ground on Saturday to help with a major facelift.

Club development officer Frank McArdle said: “Following the success of our “Dig for victory” there will be a further session starting at 9am on Saturday.

“Paint brushes will be supplied and we aim to paint everything that moves – and a lot that doesn’t.”
