Rovers nurse young blood
Story courtesy of
Tuesday’s friendly against Barlestone St Giles gave Gresley fans the chance to sample the talent currently being developed by Gresley Rovers’ youth team.
A trio of 17-year-old – Adam Stevens, Jonathon Jordan and Adam Mead – were given their senior chance and earned praise from manager Frank Northwood.

But Dick West, who shares youth team duties with Alan Titterton, insisted the trio did not represent the pick of Gresley’s sprouting crop.

He cited right winger Chris Parkin, another 17-year-old who plays for Gresley in Wednesday evening West Midlands Youth League matches – and for West Brom youth on Saturday’s.

Rovers’ young bloods are currently third in the table – one place behind local rivals Rocester who they meet at the Moat Ground on January 8th. That represents a big improvement on last season, when they finished one from bottom.

Opportunity beckons for the mini-Moatmen, with Mead, a right-sided midfielder who earned generous applause for Tuesday’s performance, currently on trials with Derby County and Stevens a Leicestershire Youth side regular.

It was defender Jordan, though, who caught the eye with a performance that belied his youth.

Indeed, Derby based youngster could have crowned the night with a goal had his shooting been on par with his defending. There will be more games and more goal chances for the new Gresley generation.
