Late Show Saw Gresley Grab All Three Points

James Harrison struck a late-minute winner for Gresley Rovers as the Moatmen collected their 19th win of the UCL Premier Division North season.

With the deadlocked tie heading into the final minutes of the game, substitute Harrison latched onto a ball from Danny Munday to tuck away his third goal of the season.

Michael Williams was sent off for a second bookable offence just before the final whistle, but the Rovers were still able to collect a win that would see them remain just six points behind league leaders Long Eaton United.

Both teams took a while to adjust to the unpredictable pitch, with the weather in the days building up to the match playing a part in the conditions.

With the crowd forced to until the 16th minute of the match for the first shot, it was Quorn’s Jack Samples and Moussa Cisse who tried their luck, but both fired well wide of the target.

Gresley struggled in the opening exchanges to enter the visitor's final third, with their first opportunity coming just past the half-hour.

Having a superior height advantage over their opponents, set pieces and lofted balls into the box would always be dangerous for the Moatmen.

Munday first had his goal-bound header from a corner blocked, before Williams had a chance from close range. Nodded on by Kane Lee, the midfielder waltzed past one defender before seeing his attempt blocked.

Their flurry of attacks built their confidence going forward and would have gained the lead if not for a fantastic reflex save from Charlie Woods. Busting down the right wing, Clark cut back onto his left foot before curling the ball towards the back post. Unmarked, Lee met the cross, but his downwards header was pushed away at the near post.

Quorn looked quiet for the remainder of the first-half but should have taken the lead early in the second. Countering from a Rovers' corner, Cisse skimmed Jordan Gough before pulling the ball across the box.

Rolling past Lewis Fenney who was expecting a shot, the ball landed to the feet of David Assuncao. With the goal at his mercy, Gresley were saved by Mason Frizelle, whose last-ditch challenge denied Quorn the lead.

The Rovers once again started the half in quiet fashion, with manager Carl Abbott using all three substitutes before the 70-minute mark in attempts to change the game in their favour.

Louis Briscoe was one of the alterations, with the forward almost making an immediate impact.

A dinked ball over the defence found the onrushing Munday, but the ‘keeper came out quickly, closing the angle and blocking the shot.

With the match balanced going into the final 10 minutes, Quorn had their best chance of the game to take all three points. Found by Cisse, Chib Chilaka's tricky feet sat down Frizelle and Fenney inside the box before shooting towards the goal.

Drilling his shot low, Alex Morris was positioned well on the line to clear away his effort, keeping the score level.

Almost falling behind, the Moatmen stole the win with just a handful of minutes left to play. Running down the right, Munday entered the box before unselfishly slotting the ball into the path of substitute Harrison.

With nobody tracking the forward, Harrison was left free at the back post, slotting the ball into an empty net, sending the stands and dugout wild.

Coming away from the Moat Ground with three points, the Rovers failed to leave the game completely unscathed, with Williams giving his marching orders in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card.

The victory moves Gresley 12 points clear of fourth-placed Anstey Nomads, and nine points in front of Loughborough Students, who currently reside in third.
