Intergro League Cup 1st Rond

The Moat Ground, Church Gresley

Tuesday, 28th November 2017, 7.45pm

Gresley Out Of The League Cup

It was another disappointing night at the Moat Ground as Gresley were knocked out of the Integro League Cup by a youthful Basford side.

As expected both sides made changes with Basford making the most. Gresley were without Reece Morris who has a suspected fractured arm, Matt Melbourne was on the bench alongside Dexter Morris-Clarke and Quirino Bahati De-Ataide Dias. Alvin Jarvis and reserve team player Zac Evans filled the other places. Starts were given to Zach Hill and Sean Phillips.

Gresley started well with Phillips having a shot parried by George Sansom on 5 minutes. Four minutes later Gresley were in front. A corner from the right by Phillips was headed home at the far post by Danny Quinn for his first goal for the club.
On 33 minutes Philips picked out the run of Louis Danquah down the right and the youngster completed his run by firing a shot into the far bottom corner.

Basford grabbed a goal back just before the break when Gideon Boetang’s cross from the right flew over the head of Gresley keeper Callum Hawkins who appeared to have thought the ball was going out.

The visitors came out showing their intentions with Harry Wakefield heading a cross from the left just wide of the near post.

On the hour Basford took the lead when Jamie Barret slipped allowing Kieran Wells to run forward and beat Hawkins.

More poor defending handed Basford another goal when the ball was lost on the edge of the area and Wakefield didn’t need to be asked twice as he drilled the ball under Hawkins.

Quinn went close heading Lucas Harrison’s free kick straight at Sansom but Gresley were undone minutes later with the best goal of the game. A good footballing move down the right ended with Wells putting the perfect ball across for substitute Anthony Graham to curl a superb ball past Hawkins.

Gresley did have a couple chances to reduce the arrears with Danquah having a shot blocked and Quinn heading Phillips’ corner from the left fractionally wide of the far post.
