Gresley Too Strong For Ivanhoe

As was expected Gresley made several changes to the side who narrowly lost to Kings Lynn on Saturday for this first round game in the Coalville Charity Cup against near neighbours Ashby Ivanhoe.

Gresley took control from the off with Marc Strzyzewski planting his header from Marc Goodfellow's corner against the bar and minutes later Jordi Gough, playing in the left wing position, going close with a high ball into the area which flew over the head of Ivanhoe's keeper John Noon but also past the far post.

The home side took the lead on 21 minutes when Jordan Nadat hit a shot which was palmed away by Noon but only as far as Goodfellow who returned the ball into the box. Nadat's missed his first attempt at the ball but not the second as he hammered in the loose ball.

Minutes later Nadat was testing the keeper again with a shot on the turn which Noon did well to get down to and push away at the base of his far post for a corner. Dean Rathbone then doubled Gresley's advantage when he drilled a low shot past Noon.

Gresley keeper George Woodard, who had largely been unemployed, was called into action five minutes before the break saving well from Luke Thorogood.

Woodward needed to be alert again early in the second half this time making a good block to deny Phil Gibson.

But it wasn't long before Gresley regained control of the match and Nadat added his second goal of the game and Gresley's third when he hit an unstoppable shot past Noon. A good move down the left involving Gough and Nadat ended with Phil Massingham firing wide of the near post.

Rathbone then curled a shot past the far post and minutes later Gough forced Noon into a fine save tipping his stinging shot over the bar.

Danny Holmes was then the provider of a superb ball into the box for Rathbone to lash home and then substitute Rikki Birch went close but his attempt was tipped over by Noon which proved to be the last action for Ivanhoe's keeper as he was replaced a minute later by James Rushton.

Nadat completed his hat-trick with four minutes remaining when his shot flew past Rushton and the game was wrapped up almost on the full time whistle when Massingham fed Rathbone down the left with the latter being tackled by a defender the ball fell kindly for substitute Royce Turville who coolly slotted the ball into the unguarded net.

Rathbone was unlucky not to have grabbed a hat-trick himself but Rushton did well to deny him from close in.
