Gresley Rovers vs Meadows Old Boys

Gresley Rovers 3 - 2 Meadows Old Boys

Rovers entertained Nottingham side Meadows Old Boys in an East Midlands Regional League clash on 12th September 1970.

A win or a draw from this game would give them their 50th consecutive league game without defeat.

However, changes were needed due to injuries and unavailability. Goalkeeper Frank Tomlin and Keith Francis both made their debuts with Mitchell and player/manager Duggins filling the vacant spots in the half back line.

Rovers: Tomlin, Fairbrother, Perry, Mitchell, King, Duggins, Webb, C Walker, Liddle, Sharpe, Francis. Sub: Corner.

Meadows Old Boys: Foster, Greenhaigh, Moore, Hammond, D Walker, Storer, Archer, Spriggs, Morris, Marshall, Wolfe.

Sub: Hackland.

Francis was soon into the game latching on to a defensive error, but his pass for Liddle was too near Foster.

After five minutes Gresley edged in front, Walker showed up the gaps in the Meadows defence when he slipped through to score with a left foot shot. Eight minutes later Walker sent Webb away down the wing to cross for Liddle who headed in the second.

Two up and with the visitors defence sagging we kept up the pressure and Liddle scored again in the nineteenth minute when he pounced on a fumbled save.

We eased up after the interval and allowed Meadows to hit back with goals from Spriggs (67th mins) and Marshall (85 mins) but never looked in real danger of not extending our unbeaten run.
