Brereton Social vs Gresley Rovers

Davey lights way for Rovers – Dave Hackett – Burton Mail

Fielding a side which included no fewer than seven players with first team experience, Gresley Rovers coasted to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Staffs County outfit Brereton Social last night.

Only a couple of fine saves by Rob Williams and some extravagant finishing by Mark Davey and Paul Acklam kept the score line blank until the 43rd minute when the former finally broke the deadlock.

When the home side failed to clear Neil Lovell’s free kick Davey picked up the loose ball before firing in a low shot.

Brereton’s one real chance to level came in the 49th minute when a casual piece of defending by John Bottomley let in Tony Maj, whose shot forced Simon Harrison to produce an excellent save.

Within the space of five minutes the game was over as the Moatmen struck twice in as many minutes.

A superbly weighted throughpass from Mick Wood picked out Davey who casually placed a shot into the bottom right hand of the net.

Rovers’ third goal owed much to the determination of Cec Wain who, having done the spadework unselfishly, set up a chance at the far post for Acklam to ram home.

Harrison pulled off another superb stop to turn over Andy Griffiths piledriver before Wood was rewarded for his industry with goal number four in the 75th minute.

Although, referee Mick Stoker chose to ignore that Pat Brown had tripped Davey in the box it mattered little because Wain and Wood exchanged a couple of passes before the latter drove a shot wide of Williams.

Even when Tony Maj finally beat Harrison in the 86th minute the crossbar came to Gresley’s aid and denied Brereton the crumb of a consolation goal.
