Leaving school Ian joined Southampton as an apprentice.
After Southampton he joined Grimsby Town where he played in approx 40 first team games and won "Young Player of the Year" award.
In 1987-1988 Ian joined Burton Albion and in his first season won "Player of the Year "award. During his time at the Albion he won both Players' and Supporters' Player of the Year awards.
Ian spent 6 years at Albion and made 261 appearances, scoring 22 goals.
