Maddocks with a mission

Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood hopes that the Indian summer of striker Andy Maddocks continues to burn brightly tomorrow.
Maddocks has been close to retirement more than once this year, but is currently enjoying another new lease of life at the Moat Ground.

And tomorrow, with Paul Acklam out through injury, the former Tamworth and VS Rugby front-runner is likely to be given a vital assignment as Rovers travel to Gainsborough to meet Worksop Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Northwood said: “Andy’s finding his feet again. He’s doing a good job and has got three goals already this season. Paul Acklam’s a fine player, but football is all about having a strong squad and I’m sure Maddocks will do a job for us again tomorrow.”

Maddocks said: “I’d decided to pack up the game before the season started. I kept getting little knocks and couldn’t shake them off and ended limping all through the week. On the first night of pre-season training at Hinckley I decided I’d had enough and told them I was finished.

“Then Frank came on and said he was short for the friendly against Dudley and everything took off again from there. I’ve shaken it off now and I’m enjoying myself again. I felt all right when I came on against Tipton on Saturday and I was pleased with my two goals, especially the first one.”
