Eight-man Rovers forced to cancel

Gresley Rovers have been forced to call off tonight’s Evans Halshaw clash at Eastwood after failing to raise a team.
The Moatmen have been rocked by last minute injuries and unavailability leaving secretary Peter Jenkinson no choice but to cancel the game.

He told the Mail: “We only have eight players. John Bottomley said he would play despite an ankle injury but that would still only have meant nine. The reserves are also scheduled for a game tonight but we barely have a team for that match.

“We might have been able to bring in players especially for the match but in the Evans Halshaw you can’t play anybody not signed before March 16th.”

Eastwood are now likely to be awarded the game which will seriously effect Gresley’s chances of progressing from their four-team group into the semi-finals.

Gresley Rovers striker Andy Maddocks has joined Banks’s League title rivals Hinckley Town – just days after declaring he would stay at the Moat Ground.

Last week Maddocks told Rovers boss Frank Northwood that he was happy to stay at Gresley for the rest of the season. On Saturday he signed for Hinckley – immediately after the two clubs had fought out a 0-0 draw at Leicester Road.

Manager Frank Northwood explained today: “We don’t mind about Andy changing his mind. He wants regular first team football which I can’t give him. He was very genuine about it, we shook hands and that was it.”
