Gresley’s play anywhere star Steve Astley was a little more worried than the rest of his teammates when goalkeeper Bob Aston was late in arriving for a recent midweek game.
Explained Astley this week: “If Bob hadn’t shown up I’d have probably ended up in goal – it’s about the only position I haven’t played in during my Gresley career.”

Astley was speaking after playing a starring role in the 2-0 midweek victory over Alfreton Town.

Moved to centre forward to replace back injury victim Paul Acklam, Astley got both goals in Gresley’s win: the first on of the best of the season at the Moat Ground and the second a fluke.

He explained: “I got the ball wide on the right and saw the keeper out of the corner of my eye so I just pushed the ball straight at him. But the first goal was a great move, especially considering the conditions. We went more or less the length of the field with one-touch football and Tracey Norton laid the ball back to me perfectly. The gap was there and I just hit it.”

Astley, though, says: “I’m just glad to be in the side – anywhere. I don’t want to miss any of it because I really fancy us this year.

New signing Wayne Scally is definitely out of Gresley Rovers’ squad for tomorrow’s trip to bottom-of-the-table Tividale.

Scally suffered a serious gash on his knee in Tuesday’s Evans Halshaw Cup gane against Alfreton.

Meanwhile, Rovers are running a form check on Bedworth left back and skipper Kevin Kane with manager Frank Northwood saying: We’re interested. He’s a very good player.”

Full back Martin Dick, out since September with a knee injury, starts his comeback with Rovers reserves.
