Pitch anger
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers’ Moat Ground pitch was last night dubbed “disgusting” and a “disgrace” – just months after major restoration work.
The outburst followed a serious injury to Rovers new signing Wayne Scally who suffered a 5in gash in his knee – allegedly caused by a stone on the pitch.

Seething Moat boss Frank Northwood said afterwards: “This is the third bad injury we’ve had as a direct result of the pitch since work was done in the summer. You wouldn’t resurface Wembley with clay. It’s about time the people responsible put the wrongs right.

“We try to get good, talented players to come to Gresley. For them to suffer injuries like Wayne has tonight – and like Ray Skeemer did a few weeks ago – just isn’t on. The surface is so bad that it could even affect our chances of winning the Banks’s League.”

Rovers’ vice-chairman Dennis Everett said: “We are very disappointed with the state of the pitch – it’s disgusting. The contractor has sent some of his men to look at it, and there were some people up at the ground today. But I really don’t see what can be done. We paid for soil, but we’ve got slurry. We’ve spent hours removing stones from the middle of the pitch.”

Rovers skipper Richard Denby said: “The pitch is terrible.”
