Frank blasts the poachers

Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood last night told rival bosses: “Stop knocking at the back door.”
Northwood reacted angrily after finding out about the latest attempt to lure one of his top players away from the Moat Ground.

The Gresley supremo claimed the stylish defender Dean Page had been asked “to name his price” by another club.

Northwood warned: “My message to that club and any other is ‘hands off.’ I’m annoyed that people are still ringing up my players. All bar one of last season’s players have now signed and if clubs keep trying the back door then I’ll take them to the Derbyshire FA.”

Northwood has added two more names to the squad which finished as runners-up in the Banks’s League last season and won the Derbyshire Senior and Banks’s League cups.

He has snapped up former Borrowash and Heanor midfielder Steve Hancock, while Rob Philpott, another midfield player, has agreed to rejoin Gresley after spells with Coventry Sporting and Nantwich Town.

Another boost for Northwood is central defender Martin Haskins’ decision to continue playing for Rovers next season despite moving home to Altrincham.

Checking out of Gresley is striker Graham Jones, who has rejoined Oldbury United.
