Plea goes out to Bass
Story courtesy of
Supporters last night urged Gresley Rovers to seek help of main sponsors Bass in an effort to bring the Moat Ground up to Beazer Homes League standard.
Rovers failed to convince Beazer officials that their ground was up to scratch for a higher grade of football – but have pledged to correct the faults.

“Why not ask Bass if they will help us,” said lifelong supporter Tony Fairbrother at the club’s annual meeting. “They own the ground and I’m sure they would like to see a higher grade of football being played here.”

After further appeals from the floor, secretary-treasurer Peter Jenkinson said he would attempt to arrange a meeting with Bass officials.

Rovers made a healthy profit last season – but were unable to provide fans with a detailed statement of accounts last night.

Secretary Peter Jenkinson explained that an extension to last season to accommodate Rovers’ two cup final appearances had meant a delay.

He added: “We are no longer a little club with a £2,000-a-year turnover. We are dealing with such things as tax on players’ wages and corporation tax and these things take time. What I can tell you is that we are doing very nicely, with gate receipts and the tote both showing an increase.

“As soon as the accounts are ready they will be made available to committee members and bona fide supporters.”

Club officials were re-elected en bloc and the meeting endorsed the appointment of Dave Hackett as match secretary.
