Cup axe falls on Rovers pair
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Moat Ground bad boys Michael Guest and Andy Moore have been axed from Gresley Rovers squad for tonight’s Banks’s League Cup final against Halesowen Harriers at Chasetown (7pm).
The players have been stripped of the chance of their second cup winner’s medal in six days after breaches of club discipline.

The shock move comes in the wake of a two-day break in Blackpool enjoyed by Rovers’ officials, players and their families.

The club declined to give details today, but secretary Peter Jenkinson confirmed: “The action has been taken by the manager as the result of problems caused on the trip to Blackpool.”

Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood declined to comment – only to say that he believed Rovers weekend on the golden mile could have an hidden benefit as they attempt to make up for the disappointment of missing out on the league title.

“This kind of thing is always good for team spirit. Everybody enjoyed themselves and I’m certain it will stand us in good stead for the final.”

He expects an entertaining game much different in character to their Derbyshire Senior Cup triumph over Stapenhill..

“Stapenhill did very well against us, but Halesowen have a bit more polish and like to play open football like us.”
