Karl comes back

Karl Austin the highly-rated goalkeeper whose career at the Moat Ground seemed all but over during the summer, is back.
The £2,000 keeper, whose admirers include Derby County manager Arthur Cox and Alan Buckley, boss of non-league giants Kettering, lines up for Gresley as they clash yet again with arch-rivals Atherstone United at the Moat tonight (7.30).

Rovers boss Frank Northwood said today: “Karl’s a class keeper and everyone at Gresley is delighted that he wants to stay with the club – but no-one more than me.”

Northwood uses tonight’s challenge game for the Frank Tomlin Trophy to field what he feels is his strongest available side.

That means a further opportunity for Rovers fans to examine the potential of a string of new faces, including defenders Martin Dick and Barry Wilcox, midfielders Neil Mason and Neil Lovell and striker Keith Hill, three goals in pre-season games so far.

The winners of tonight’s game will receive the trophy contested between Rovers and Newhall United in recognition of the service given to both clubs by former keeper Frank Tomlin, whose career was ended by a work accident.
