Rovers ace battling back

Gresley Rovers striker Kieron Smith has begun the long road back to fitness after undergoing a knee operation at Bretby Orthopaedic Hostpital.
The popular front-runner scored 14 goals last term before his season was prematurely ended by a tackle from Rushden & Diamonds defender John Flowers in December.

It capped a bad year for Sutton-in-Ashfield based Smith, who also lost his job as a face worker at Silverhill Colliery as part of the Government’s mines cutbacks.

He attempted a series of comebacks before cruciate ligament damage – similar to the injury suffered in the 1991 FA Cup Final by England International Paul Gascoigne – was diagnosed.

The 33-year-old now faces a lengthy spell of intensive physiotherapy and is not expected to play during the coming season.

Rovers secretary Neil Betteridge said: “Kieron’s in good spirits and glad he’s got the operation behind him. He’s got to take it as it comes. Initially the doctors said it would be a year before he could play again.”
