Gresley win the benefit match (updated)
The years were rolled back as an ex-Gresley Rovers All Stars took on ex-Derby County All Stars in a benefit match at the Moat Ground on Sunday afternoon.
The match was arranged to add to a fund set up for the young daughter of the late Russell Aston.

Corporal Aston, of the Royal Military Police, was tragically killed along with 5 colleagues while on peace keeping duties in Iraq in June of this year.

In front of a decent crowd the game "flowed" from end to end with glimpses of the old skills that thrilled both the Baseball Ground and the Moat Ground in seasons past.

Gresley took the advantage with a goal from Neil Lovell but they were soon pegged back when Derby were awarded a dubious penalty. Andy Garner appeared to have been upended in the area and recovered enough to slot the ball through the hands of old team-mate Nick Goodwin.

After half time Gresley scored three more goals. Paul Acklam and Keiron Smith both showed they still knew were the back of the net was and Neil Lovell adding a second for himself and Gresley's fourth.

Just before the final whistle a kind "mistake" by Gresley defender Steve Gray allowed Garner to run on and beat Goodwin again.

Final score:
Ex-Gresley Rovers All Stars 4 – 2 Ex-Derby County All Stars

UPDATE Over £2300 was raised at the Moat Ground yesterday.
