Barry Morton inspects a new drainage trench

Is it really a year since the Moat Ground was last dug up? Well, work has begun once more to improve the playing surface.
The Moat Ground usually comes in for some harmless criticism and some not so harmless! But, if anyone had had a look at the pitch on Saturday for the last game of the season against Weston-super-Mare they would have seen more grass than on many other pitches in the Western Division and indeed those in the higher echelons of non-league football.

A group of visitors to the last game remarked how good the pitch looked and it would be a surprise to the players to be actually running about on grass at this time of the season.

There have been well over 60 games played at the Moat Ground this season and the pitch has fared amazingly well.

All credit for the playing surface must go to the dedication of the Gresley Rovers hardworking ground staff Nev Bird, Barrie Morton and the rest of the helpers.

Bottom GoalTheir work did not consist just of weeding, seeding and mowing but, at the end of last season, included major work carried out on the drainage making a remarkable improvement.

This time more drainage is being installed along side the near touch line to help drain the top corner with further smaller areas, the bottom goal area and centre circle, also being improved.

Gresley Rovers have played at the Moat Ground since 1909 but there has not been a season where the pitch has lasted so long and looked so good right up to the last game as it has this season.

Well done and thank you to everyone concerned.
