Rovers forced into cup change

Gresley Rovers face the prospect of a major reshuffle for tonight’s West Midlands League Cup semi-final second leg against Westfields at the Moat Ground (7.45pm).
With two players already certain to miss the tie and two more doubtful, new manager Steve Dolby was today considering his options in the likelihood of a defensive shake-up.

But Dolby insisted: “Whoever comes in will do a good job – there’s no question of our weakening the team.”

Defenders Stuart Evans and Jason Minton are the certain non-starters, Evans because of a groin strain suffered while playing for Derby County reserves and Minton because he is cup-tied.

A third defender, full back Martin Dick, faces a late test on a hamstring pull along with top scorer Brian Beresford, who has an ankle knock.

Dolby said: “If there’s any doubt none of them will play – we don’t want their injuries getting worse. But we’ll leave any decision until the last minute.”

Rovers lead 2-0 thanks to goals from Neil Lovell and Craig Weston in the first leg three weeks ago but Dolby warned: “It’s not over, even though we are in the driving seat. If they score an early goal their heads will be up and they’ll be back in it. We’ll be looking to contain them and, if we score first, the tie will be then effectively over.”
