Beaman offered Frank verdict

Gresley Rovers joined Wednesfield, Paget Rangers and Westfields in the last four of the West Midlands League Cup after a 3-1 quarter-final replay victory at the Moat Ground last night.
And afterwards Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood immediately took issue with opposite number Alan Beaman.

“Their manager said they should have won it on Saturday but I beg to differ with that – we had two great chances and should have had a penalty,” he stormed.

“But tonight we saved the best till last and thoroughly deserved our win.”

A Brian Beresford double – the first from the penalty spot – sealed Gresley’s win after Kieron Smith had cancelled out Nigel Mottram’s first half strike.

Rovers’ coach Steve Dolby said: “Perhaps that result will put paid to the rumour that Rocester are our bogey side. We’ve dominated them for the last two seasons – and long may it continue.”

There was a different viewpoint from Beaman, however.

“We’ve only ourselves to blame for losing tonight,” he said. “We had our chances to win on Saturday and we had our chances to win in the first half tonight. We weathered the storm before the break but I thought our front three were disastrous in the second half – they just didn’t hold the ball up.

“But Gresley never played well – we didn’t meet them on their best performance and we had the chance to nail them. It was as dead a Gresley team as I’ve ever seen in the first half but we weren’t good enough to take advantage.”
