Boss sees positives

John McGinlay spared his Gresley Rovers players a rollicking after their third consecutive Dr Martens Western Division defeat on Saturday.
After Bedworth United bounced back from a goal from McGinlay after just 49 seconds to win 2-1 at the Moat Ground the Rovers chief said he had been encouraged by some aspects of his team's display.

"We had a good start, they came back into it for 10 or 15 minutes but we ended the first half back on top," said the Moat supremo, whose afternoon on the field had ended after just 18 minutes after a recurrence of a calf injury.

"In the second half we created a lot of good chances with some good balls across the box but we didn't put them away. Then they broke away and scored: it was a sucker punch."

McGinlay would not commit himself over claims that Rovers should have had a 90th -minute penalty after striker Simon Tucker was knocked unconscious by a challenge from a Bedworth defender.

Said the Moat boss: "I couldn't see very well from where I was but Simon is adamant he had his legs taken away. That seems to be the way it's going at the moment but we should never have been in that position. With the chances we had we should have been well in front by then. But there was better quality in our performance today, we just couldn't finish off. Some of our play was encouraging."

Rovers suffered a pre-match blow when Ravi Sangha cried off with an ankle injury, with the striker definitely out of tomorrow's (Tues) trip to Solihull Borough (7.45pm).

  • Gresley reserves earned a 1-0 away win at Bilston Town thanks to Neil Kitching's close range header while Ian Wright was also impressive in the Rovers goal.

  • Rovers are running a supporters' coach to Saturday's game at Mangotsfield United, leaving the Gresley Triangle at 11am. Bookings should be made through Barrie Morton on 0378 954347
