Northwood turns to old firm
Story courtesy of
Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood tonight calls up strikers Martin Devaney and Brian Beresford on loan – to reunite his Rovers “old firm” forward line for the visit to Oldswinford (7.30pm).
Faced with a mounting injury list as Gresley’s three-games-a-week fixture backlog takes it’s toll, Northwood has again resorted to the goodwill of neighbouring clubs, bringing in Devaney from Tamworth and Beresford from Stapenhill.

He said today: “We would obviously like to thank Mick Allsop and Stapenhill Football Club for allowing Brian to play for us tonight, and the same goes for Graham Smith at Tamworth, who has said Martin can play one game a week for us.”

Devaney and Beresford stand in for injured strikers Carl Rathbone and Kieron Smith, while elsewhere Northwood has to rejig his side to cover for two new injuries.

Reserve keeper Tony Moore takes over from Bob Aston, who suffered a groin strain in Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Chasetown, while Scott Elliott takes over from Neil Lovell, victim of a pulled muscle, in midfield. Martin Dick stands by to occupy Elliott’s full back berth.

Northwood admitted: “The number of games we’re being required to play is obviously taking its toll – that’s why it’s so important to bring in other players.

“They may be from other clubs, but everybody who pulls on a Gresley shirt becomes a Gresley Rovers player and wears the shirt with pride.”
