Ernest Stretton

Debut game for Gresley Rovers first team
v Leicester City Reserves (h) 16th September 1920

Final game
v Leicester City Reserves (a) 6th April 1921

Ernie was born in Tamworth, Staffs and moved to Woodville in December 1918, when his job (as a Cooper with Holder's Brewery in Birmingham) went to a a former employee returning after the War.

Family contacts managed to get him a job (also as a Cooper) with Brunt, Bucknall & Co's Hartshorne Brewery in High Street Woodville and he lodged with his Aunt in Swadlincote Road.

He lived in Woodville for over 2 years, before emigrating to Australia in May 1921 (and a job as a Cooper with Fosters Brewery in Melbourne) - so the Leicester game above, must have been one of his last for the Rovers.

He was a decent footballer by all accounts - his Niece used to say he was a, "hard tackling Centre Half". He played Amateur Football in Brum before Gresley (I don't know which club) and after emigrating, played for (Australian Rules Club) Collingwood FC. One last connection with the Burton / Swadlincote area, was when he came back to England in the late-60's (as a Director of the Brewery) to set up the first contract (with Ind Coope) for the distribution of Fosters Lager in the UK !
