Manager John McGinlay was forced to take over in goal for Gresley Rovers reserves last night after Richard Selby was taken to hospital with a suspected depressed cheekbone and eye socket following a clash of heads.
Selby was injured in the 35th minute of the 2-2 Midland Combination Challenge Bowl group game draw with Ilkeston at the Moat Ground as he tried to clear a back pass.

As he went to make the clearance the ball bobbled, ballooning off his shin into the air. With the ball out of his area, Selby attempted to head clear, but clashed heads with an Ilkeston forward.

Selby was taken to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary where it appears the initial fears surrounding the injury were allayed.

Said Rovers' chairman Mark Evans, who drove Selby back to his Loughborough home after he was discharged around midnight: "The doctors are not of the opinion that he has fractured his eye socket. However, there is fluid behind his eye and he has to go back for further tests today. He is badly bruised, has abrasions above and below his eye, is swollen and in pain."

Selby, who as only just returned to action from a shoulder injury, has suffered from a damaged eye socket before.

Said McGinlay: " It certainly looks like Selby will be out for a few weeks. It is a shame because he has only played a couple of games since his injury."

On his own performance McGinlay, who was at fault for the second Ilkeston goal, said: "I apologised to the boys afterwards, but there were not too many volunteers. For the second goal, one minute I had it then the next minute I didn't, but the lads did really well to get a draw."

  • Rovers are running a supporters' coach to Bromsgrove on Saturday. Tickets, priced at £4.50, are available from Barry Morton on 0378 954347. It leaves Gresley Triangle at 1.15pm.
