Rovers start with victory

Gresley Rovers kicked off their Evans Halshaw Trophy campaign with a 3-2 away victory at Leicester United last night, but it was not achieved without cost.
Left back Scott Elliott aggravated a long-term groin injury, ironically while scoring an own goal. He had to be replaced at half time.

However, coach Steve Dolby was overjoyed with a crucial away win in Rovers’ first game of the eight-match group.

He said: “The first 10 minutes were a very difficult time for us, but after a rather lucky goal we settled down very well.

“The back four played exceptionally and we must be pleased with a win in such conditions. It’s a very competent start to this competition and the new boys did more than hols their own.”

Rovers face a home tie against Stourport Swifts in the quarterfinals of the Banks’ Premier Division League Cup if they overcome Blakenall.

In the Division Two cup, Rovers Reserves face an away tie against Lye Town Reserves.
