Rovers fear crowd slump

Gresley Rovers fear a new road scheme near the Moat Ground could cost them hundreds of pounds at the turnstiles next season.
Club officials are worried that fans will be put off by difficulties they are likely to experience parking their cars close to the ground because of restricted access to neighbouring streets.Now they are calling on Derbyshire County Council to make land available for off-street parking.
Vice-chairman Dennis Everitt said: “We’ve no axe to grind with the local council because they’ve always been very helpful. It’s the people at Matlock our argument is with.
“In the last two or three years we’ve spent £60,000 on improving our ground because we want to create something the community can be proud of. We’ve not asked for a penny of the ratepayers money and we’ve always made our facilities available for local league and schools finals.
“All we ask is a little bit of co-operation from the county council, but they take no account of the fact that Gresley Rovers have been in business for more than 100 years and the club is very important to people in this area.”
Rovers believe that the county council should make available for parking a piece of land opposite the main entrance to their ground.
Club president Gordon Duggins said: “We understand the land is earmarked for housing, but it would be ideal for parking and, as in other areas of the country, could double up as a floodlit six-a-side area for local children to use.”
