Rovers take a rest

Gresley Rovers are hoping to tighten their grip on the top spot in the Banks’s League without kicking a ball in the next week.
The vagaries of the league’s fixture planning means a two-week gap for Rovers between last Saturday’s goalless draw at Oldbury and next weekend’s trip to Malvern.

But two of the principal rivals, Blakenall and Hinckley Town, face a hectic run in that could cost them dearly.

Blakenall have already paid the penalty of a fixture backlog, losing 4-3 at home to Lye Town last night.

For them to now go on and win the league is a mathematical possibility, but in reality the Walsall side are in need of a minor miracle.

Hinckley, though currently enjoying an excellent sequence of results, are faced with a similarly perilous finale to the season.

They have to play five games in eight days – including tough tests against Paget Rangers and Halesowen Harriers – at the end of what has been a long, hard run-in.

That means arch-rivals Rocester remain the biggest threat, not only in terms of the championship but also in the Beazer Homes League promotion stakes.

On the one hand the Romans finish off with eminently winnable games against Harrisons and Hinckley Athletic and believe that if they hit the 82 point marked they will be crowned as champions.

On the other they have stolen a march on Rovers by completing ground improvements ahead of schedule to the satisfaction, they hope, of officials who visit the Rivers Field on Sunday to carry out their grading inspection.
