Plug pulled on Rovers

Gresley Rovers have been thrown out of the Evans Halshaw Floodlit Cup competition.
In an about face by the competition’s management committee Rovers, who were originally fined £100 for failing to raise a side for a game at Eastwood, were informed on Saturday morning of their expulsion.

Club secretary Peter Jenkinson said: “They had an executive meeting on Wednesday and it was decided that Gresley would be fined £100 and the points awarded to Eastwood. After Matlock had beaten Alfreton 3-1 on Thursday I rang the organiser of the competition and was told that Matlock had qualified for the semi-finals on goal difference. I told him he was wrong and that Gresley had a better goal difference.

“Obviously he rang Matlock and told them they weren’t going to Spalding in the semi-final.

“At 10.35 on Saturday morning I had a phone call to say they had had another meeting following my phone call complaining at the severity of the fine. They had taken advice from the Notts and Derbys FA s and decided to reduce the fine to £50 and expel us from the competition.”

Rovers’ committee is to discuss the decision but Jenkinson said: “We’ve got to accept their ruling – there’s nothing else we can do about it.”

Rovers abandon their 4-4-2 formation and go back on the attack at Chasetown tonight (7.30pm).

Rovers will be attempting to pick up the pieces after Saturday’s 2-1 home humiliation by Wolverhampton Casuals.

And manager Frank Northwood has hinted that a new face may appear in the ranks, with a pre-match announcement awaited.

Trace Norton treks back from Exeter to boost Rovers’ flagging title challenge, midfielder Tommy Thompson stepping down.
