Squad is too large

Gresley Rovers boss John McGinlay is gearing himself up for a spot of pruning of his squad after admitting, "We've got too many players."
McGinlay had a good chance to assess the situation when taking charge of a practice match at the Moat Ground after Saturday's league game at Solihull Borough was called off because of a water logged pitch.

Every fit and available member of the squad was given at least half-an -hour, giving McGinlay an idea of what was at his disposal.

"Obviously we would have liked the game to have gone ahead but it was a worthwhile exercise," he said.

"It was a good chance to put names to faces and have a good look at everyone. We have a lot of similar players in similar positions at the club and we have got too many players, so we will need to whittle it down. We started off with the first team against the reserves, but there was not too much to choose between them. There was a good turnout and I have said that everyone will be given a chance. The players have been given a clean slate and everyone will start afresh with me. We just need a game now. We have an important match on Saturday and it would be nice to get one in before then."

McGinlay will hope that game will be Tuesday night when they are due to travel to Sutton Coldfield Town in the Dr Martens Cup.
