Former Burton Albion stalwart Gil Land has been given a FA Vase mission for Gresley Rovers tomorrow – to cancel out Paget Ranger’s potent strike threat.
Land is preferred to Martin Haskins at the heart of Rovers’ defence with manager Frank Northwood saying: “Gilly will be back where he belongs we had a long talk after training on Tuesday and I made it clear I was never going to do the dirty on the lad. He knows he could get a shirt in most teams because of his versatility he’s done a good job for us in midfield covering for injuries but now he’s going to play in the position where he does best.

“He had one bad game for us at the back out of ten or eleven. Well, he’s entitled to that.”

And Northwood is hoping that another important factor will come into play against Paget – the Moat Ground crowd.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout and all I ask is that the crowd get behind us – that’s especially important in the Vase. We’ll be looking for a bit of cup luck to help us too. Last year’s game against Tamworth was a good example of that.

“Paul Acklam scored what we all believe was a perfectly good goal but it wasn’t given and Tamworth went on to win the game – and eventually the FA Vase. That was the third season running we’d gone out to a side that went all the way to Wembley. And while I don’t want to start making predictions, obviously I’d love us to do well. A good run in the Vase would be good for Gresley Rovers and good for the town.”
