Northwood fires a warning

Gresley boss Frank Northwood has warned his players to be on their toes tomorrow as they meet the Banks’s League’s latest resurgent force.
Four years ago Wednesfield Social were one of Gresley’s title rivals. Since then they have slumped into a bottom-six mediocrity.

But under guidance of former Wolves star Terry Wharton Social are on the rise again and now lie on the fringe of the title-chasing pack after Saturday’s impressive 1-0 win at Rushall Olympic.

And with important FA vase and Derbyshire Senior Cup ties looming Northwood this week reminded his troops to look no further than tomorrow.

“Wednesfield have been doing well recently and it won’t be an easy game for us,” he predicted.

A repeat of last season’s 6-0 win at Wednesfield seems highly unlikely but any sort of win tomorrow would suit Northwood, especially as Social must also play title rivals Rushall, Halesowen Harriers, Rocester and champions Blakenall twice before Christmas.

The Gresley chief paid tribute to Hinckley Town this week for their part in Saturday’s seven-goal Moat Ground thriller – and had harsh words for one of his top players.

“Hinckley where one of, if not the best side we’ve played this season. But we produced some of our best football of the season against them, and in the end the scoreline flattered them.

“Steve Astley has been the star of the side this week in, week out this season but on Saturday he was the villain. He gave away the ball for their second goal and missed a cross for there third. Had it not been for those errors we would have won far more convincingly.”
