Gresley Rovers look set to receive a second slap in the face from the Beazer Homes League as they make a last ditch attempt to gain promotion to the Midlands Division.
The Moatmen have renewed attempts to gain entry to the league a month after being rejected following the recent demise of Coventry Sporting – but again seem certain to have their hopes dashed.

Sporting will be wound up at the weekend after losing the lease on their ground and will leave a vacancy in the Beazer Homes League.

Rovers – the Banks’s League runners-up – are desperate to make the move up to the higher reaches of non-league football but had their application turned down earlier this summer after a ground inspection.

Club chairman Peter Hall however has now decided to re-apply in the hope that Gresley can step into Coventry Sporting’s shoes for the coming season.

“I am going to a grounds grading of the Banks’s League tomorrow,” he said. “So I hope to have more information then. But I can say that the problem’s with the ground were all minor things and we have carried out the improvements already. It seems to make sense to re-apply and keep our fingers crossed. We have nothing to lose.”

Beazer Homes league secretary Dennis Strudwick however saw little hope for Gresley.

“They have failed the ground grading so I don’t see how they could be considered. At this late stage anyway I doubt if Coventry Sporting could be replaced. We will probably play with 21 teams.”

That decision could be another bitter blow for the Moatmen.
