Most managers and chairman endure rather than enjoy sometimes barely cordial relationships but at Gresley Rovers at least, Mark Evans and his caretaker boss are pulling together during the South Derbyshire club's current limbo.
It was chairman Evans and his board who dispensed with the services of former boss Brian Kenning last month with reserve team manager Alan Titterton taking over care taking duties.

And the Willington-based Titterton has met with success in style, his record going into tomorrows (Saturday) Dr Martens Western Division clash with Racing Club Warwick being P4, W3, L1.

"And I still reckon we could have beaten Weston-super-Mare," said Titterton. "It was two set pieces and a bad second half performance which cost us dear. But that's behind us now and confidence in the camp is obviously very high at the moment.

"We're winning games, scoring goals, playing some good stuff and I think the fans appreciate that because they're giving us great support - if you look at the teams above us there's not many who get bigger crowds than us."

It is the sort of turnaround Evans cannot ignore and Titterton has made no secret he would like to take over the manager's reins on a permanent basis.

A decision is not now expected until the New Year, despite Evans originally saying he hoped to make an announcement before Christmas.

Titterton, currently being ably assisted by right-hand man Gary Norton said: "The chairman's man I respect and he's promised me he will keep me up to date with all the developments.

"I know he's working very hard on the financial side at the moment (Rovers are still subject to an FA ban on signing contract players while they owe some former players wages) and we're hopeful that problem will be resolved very soon. He's a smashing man to work for - you can phone him up at any time and have a chat with him. Obviously he knows my hats in the ring for the manager's job but at the moment I'm trying to keep a low profile and just get on with the job.

"I'm just trying to do what I can for Gresley Rovers and hopefully whoever the board appoints will be the right man for the job. If it's not me then so be it, in my time at the club I've seen plenty of managers come and go so it won't be anything new to me."
