Davies set for a shock cup return

Stapenhill boss Mick Allsopp could be planning to use former Derby County star Roger Davies as a surprise weapon in tomorrow’s Derbyshire Senior Cup final against Gresley Rovers at Edge Hill (7pm).
Davies, out of action for eight weeks because of a pelvis injury, was today named in a 16-man squad as the Swans prepare to defend their 1-0 lead from last week’s Moat Ground clash.

Allsopp was pleased with what he saw when Davies turned out for the Rams All Stars in a charity match before Saturday’s Derby – Aston Villa clash at the Baseball Ground.

Said Allsopp today: “Roger looked really sharp. I thought he came through the game very well.”

Davies will be relishing the possibility of helping to plot the downfall of his old club.

He has never forgiven Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood for getting rid of him – after Northwood had won a managerial power struggle.

Gresley’s hopes of lifting the Banks’s League title received a boost last night – with a little help from a side they face in another cup final next week.

Rovers stayed three points clear at the to of the table after arch-rivals Blakenall – 7-0 winners at home to Westfields on Monday – slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Halesowen Harriers, who Gresley meet next Tuesday in the League Cup final at Chasetown.

Blakenall must now take four points from their final two games of the campaign if they are to deprive Rovers of the championship.

The Walsall outfit entertain Tipton tomorrow night and are home to Chasetown on Saturday.
