Gresley fight to keep top duo
Story courtesy of
Gresley Rovers are battling to prevent rival clubs from plucking star names from their all-conquering squad.
On the eve of their epic FA Vase third round battle with Tamworth, Rovers revealed that brilliant midfielder Richard Denby and in-form striker Tracey Norton are wanted by clubs from higher up the football ladder.

Denby, a close season signing from Alfreton Town, is being trailed by troubled HFS Northern Premier Leaguers Worksop Town.

And Norton, scorer of 11 goals in ten outings since his move from Oldbury United, tops the Christmas shopping list of Worcester City boss George Rooney.

But Rovers made it clear today that they are prepared to make a determined bid to prevent the break-up of the side currently setting the pace at the top of the Banks’s League Premier Division.

Secretary Peter Jenkinson, said: “Both players are on contract with us and we don’t want them or anyone else to leave Gresley. Our manager Frank Northwood has told Worksop and Worcester to come back to us when they are prepared to make sensible offers.

“But both clubs have been told that we are not prepared to even talk about the possibility of a deal unless they come up with substantial offers. Even then we shall do our best to keep Richard and Tracey at Gresley. I must admit, though, that in Worcester’s case they didn’t seem frightened off by the sort of figure we are talking about.”

With a hugely successful weekly tote, profitable social club and the prospect of substantial income through the turnstiles, Gresley are under no pressure to sell their best players.
