Wells scare
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers’ 3-0 win at Lye Town on Saturday ended in near tragedy when midfielder Ian Wells swallowed his tongue after an accidental collision with an opponent.
As anxious players and officials looked on Wells lay choking before being revived by Rovers coach Keith Milner and his Lye opposite number.

After being stretchered off semi-conscious Wells was later taken to hospital for checks but was expected to make a complete recovery.

Milner said afterwards: “It looked touch and go to me. After he went down the manager shouted to Paul Acklam to have a look at him and he said he was choking. I didn’t wait for the referee to stop the game – I was on the pitch.”

Rovers’ two-goal hero Acklam admitted: “I was frightened to death. After he went down I tried to turn his head but the muscles in his neck just tightened up and I couldn’t move him.
