Brian Fidler, the man at the helm when Burton Albion went all the way to Wembley in the FA Trophy, believes Gresley Rovers have the pedigree to cause an FA Cup upset tomorrow.
Fidler took his new charges at Worksop back to his old Northolme stamping ground on Tuesday – and saw then achieve a satisfying 3-1 Northern Premier League victory over Gainsborough Trinity.

And on the eve of Gresley’s journey there in the first qualifying round of the cup, Fidler’s advice to Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood and his men is: “Raise your game, roll your sleeves up and get at ‘em because you are capable of beating them.”

Fidler explained: “Gainsborough are having a bad time of it at the moment. I was speaking to their manager Ernie Oliver after the game and, believe me, he’s a worried man. They let in five at Morecambe last Saturday and we stuck another three past them on Tuesday night.

“Obviously I’m a bit in the dark because I’ve not seen Gresley play this season, but having spent a lot of time in the same patch as them I now what sort of club they are and the type of players they’ve got.

“In my view they are they are more than capable of getting a result. The Gainsborough lads are looking around at each other and asking questions. That’s always the sign of a struggling team.”

Fidler considers another former Albion old boy – Trentan Wiggan – to be the biggest threat to the Moatmen.

“Trent’s really flying at the moment. I’ve seen Gainsborough three times this season and he’s playing probably the best football of his career. They’ll have to keep a close watch on him and also a lad called Simon Dwyer who was at Matlock last season.”
