Frank in race storm

Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood last night accused fans of hurling racial abuse at midfielder Joe Jackson.
“It’s only a small minority to blame,” said Northwood, “but they’ve certainly got it in for Joe and it’s affecting his form.”

He added: “These so-called fans have only recently started coming to our games and I think they’re out to cause trouble. My advise to them is to cut it out or stay away because we don’t need their sort at the Moat Ground.”

Northwood also claimed his wife and family had had to suffer jibes as Gresley’s Banks’s League title hopes faded in a 1-1 draw against Harrisons.

He said: “If anyone wants to criticise me they should be man enough to do it to my face. My daughter was reduced to tears at one stage. I’m prepared to stand up and be counted because that’s part and parcel of a manager’s job, but it’s just not on when his family has to take the stick.”
