Keeper battle
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
A battle of the goalkeepers is looming at the Moat Ground following news that Bob Aston’s suspension has been cut to 21 days.
Aston, originally banned for 56 days for his part in the notorious nose-biting incident earlier in the season, began his “sentence” on Monday.

And it means Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood will have to decide between the former Eastwood Hanley player and the present incumbent Karl Austin early in the New Year.

Austin’s erratic behaviour hardly strengthens his case, but the situation is clouded by the fact that Aston is cup-tied for games in the FA Vase.

The longer Rovers stay in the competition, the harder it will become for Northwood to keep both players happy.

John Wayte has quit his job as reserve team manager at the Moat Ground.

Wayte is leaving for “personal reasons” – a statement behind which lies the real truth. The fact is that he has found himself involved in an impossible division of loyalty between Rovers and his job as manager of the Burton Sunday League squad.

The word is that Wayte and his first team boss Frank Northwood clashed after Rovers striker Brian Beresford, who plays for Wayte’s Telefusion on Sundays, had been called up for a League representative game only 48 hours before he was due to play for Gresley in their FA Vase tie at RSSC Ransomes.
