Merry dance

Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood is planning an audacious move for one of non-league soccer’s top goalkeepers – Telford United’s former Altrincham star Trevor Dance.
Northwood will make a cash bid for Dance’s services this week after hearing that first-choice keeper Bob Aston has been handed a swingeing 56-day suspension.

Aston’s ban follows an incident at the end of an FA Cup tie between his former club, Eastwood Hanley, and Leek Town, in which the keeper allegedly bit the Leek manager Neil Baker’s nose.

Northwood said last night: “Bob is planning to appeal against the suspension and I’ll support him all the way. He certainly didn’t get much backing from Eastwood. He turned up at the hearing where they decided on the suspension completely on his own – even though Leek had all their directors there.

“Bob got a £30 fine on top of his suspension while Leek’s manager got off with just a fine. The incident happened on the same weekend that I approached Eastwood about signing Bob to ask if they wanted seven days’ notice of approach. Their manager, Mr Roach, rang me back and said to go ahead and approach him. That was on the Sunday and on the Tuesday it came out in the Stoke papers that Aston had been sacked.

“I’m declaring was on this guy. I want to know why he didn’t tell me the truth.”

Northwood admitted however, that if Aston were suspended he would be left “on a tightrope” – hence the approach for the £1,500-rated Dance, who is currently in dispute with Telford and is not playing in their GM Vauxhall Conference side.

Meanwhile, Gresley’s former £1.25m midfield man Steve Daley is all set to make his debut against Tipton Town at the Moat Ground tomorrow (7.30pm).

Midfielder Jon Laws is ruled out following the death of his father.
